To My Son Ryan

My music is about praising Jesus and sharing the hope He provides. Despite the occasion, life brings struggle. I hope my music conveys a silver lining on someone’s darkest day. I cannot think of a clearer embodiment motivating my ministry than my son Ryan. Born on June 3, 1993, he is our eldest son. Ryan graduated from D.H. Conley High School in 2011 and went on to attend North Carolina State University. Most recently, he was pursuing his passion for psychology at East Carolina University. In May 2019, Ryan met and fell in love with Juliann Shirley. The two were married on August 16, 2024, and together they were raising their beloved 10-year-old daughter, Airlie Mullen. A gifted musician, Ryan served on the worship teams of several local ministries, including Reimage Church, where he and his family were members. He found joy in sharing his talents with others, recently beginning to offer guitar lessons. Ryan cherished time with his family—whether at the beach, during game nights, music sessions, movie marathons, or bowling outings, he brought warmth and laughter to every moment. Professionally, Ryan dedicated several years to behavioral health care and non-profit ministries, where he fulfilled his deep passion for serving underprivileged communities. His compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others touched countless lives. Our son, 31, tragically passed away on April 26, 2025. However, Charlene and I encountered our silver lining on our darkest day. Ryan acknowledged his Savior’s saving love. He is joyfully praising Jesus, his hope fulfilled.
